Jean Perron's Habs priorities
Now that the Canadiens are waiting until next season, what should be their biggest priority? Former Habs coach Jean Perron says they have to get bigger.
Perron, on 'The Habs Show' Saturday afternoon, said he's a big fan of Max Pacioretty because he skates and he's physical and those are the kinds of players the Habs need.
He also used Mathieu Darche as an example of someone on the roster who plays a physical game. But as far as Perron is concerned, the Canadiens are sorely lacking in that department.
As far as Scott Gomez is concerned, Perron says that if he were the coach of the Canadiens these days, he would have benched Gomez early in the season. He says if Alain Vigneault can bench Roberto Luongo in the playoffs, Jacques Martin could have and should have benched Gomez during the regular season.
Perron says the underachieving Benoit Pouliot has played his last game for the Canadiens and he hopes the same is true for Andrei Kostitsyn. He thinks the Habs will make Kostitsyn a qualifying offer and try to trade him during the off-season.
And what about the defense? Perron would rather hold on to James Wizniewski than Andrei Markov. Both are unrestricted free agents. Perron says Markov has contributed little in general during post-season play.
Hal Gill and Roman Hamrlik are also unrestricted free agents. If Perron had his way, he'd keep Hamrlik. He acknowledges Gill's leadership skills but thinks Hamrlik is a better defenseman.
