Spacek traded to Carolina for Tomas Kaberle; Gionta misses trip

The struggling Canadiens reached out to a team that's struggling even more for some blue-line help.

They traded Jaroslav Spacek to Kirk Muller's Carolina Hurricanes in return for Tomas Kaberle.

The 33-year-old Kaberle has been in the NHL since 1999, with spells in Toronto and Boston before signing a three-year contract with Carolina worth $12.75 million this past off-season. He was part of last year's Stanley Cup-winning team in Boston.

So far this season with Carolina, he has 9 assists in 29 games, and has a plus-minus of -12.

Also today, Frederic St Denis was sent to Hamilton. Chris Campoli has been cleared to play but it's not clear whether or not he'll be in the line-up tomorrow afternoon in New Jersey. Brian Gionta won't play after suffering a lower-body injury last night during the shoot-out loss to the Canucks.

Scott Gomez has been out since November 25th. He practiced today with the team for the first time since then but hasn't been cleared for contact.

This is clearly a desperation move, it may just backfire on the HABS just like the move to get Gomez. After this year, there is another 2 more years at $4.25 million. Did the HABS not see how poorly Kaberle played in the playoffs back in May and June? The Hurricanes GM publicly critisized Kaberle for his weak play.

Kaberle is prone to giving the puck away, does not shoot much on the power play and he does not play a physical game. The Leafs could not wait to get rid of him, the Bruins did not want to re-sign him and the Hurricanes wanted to get rid of him only a few months after signing him to a 3 year deal.

You really have to question the Canadiens management on this move. There are plenty of other defensemen they could have gone after.

Sorry, this is a bad move.

@Thomas The Problem is not wether Tomas Kaberle trade is a good move. The Problem is a Disruptive Pierre Gauthier that knows he's out of a job come april 2012. Hilarious that all Top Brass Trades look Infantile, No fun being the Laughing Stock of the NHL.
