Mahovlich: never saw greatest goal ever
Peter Mahovlich got off the ice just in time for Paul Henderson to score the greatest goal in hockey history, but the longtime Montreal Canadiens admits he never actually saw Team Canada get the gamewinning goal to beat the Soviet hockey empire.
Mahovlich recalls the moments leading up to his Habs' teammate Cournoyer helping set up Henderson to beat Tretiak in the 8th and deciding game in Moscow, but what Mahovlich remembers best is the raw emotional support for Canadian fans.
Listen to Mahovlich tell of putting NHL hatreds aside (yes, this means you Boston!) and saving national pride. The biggest winner of the series, suggests Mahovlich?
"The game of hockey."
"These Canadians (who travelled to Moscow) standing up singing 'Oh Canada' cheering us, I'm getting a little emotional here. It's terrible---brings tears in my eyes thinking how emotional it was over there."
