Sentencing of dog killer in Granby

Posted By: Michel Boyer · 1/4/2012 7:00:00 AM

A sentencing is expected to take place in Granby Wednesday.

Normand Girard, 52-years-old, pleaded guilty to taking a nail gun and killing several dogs in the townships last year.

The act sparked an uproar from animal lovers everywhere.

He told the courts he did not want them to suffer and expected them to die right away.

The accused said he acted out of desperation...his youngest daughter left the dogs with him before moving into an apartment.

Alana Devine, Director of Animal Advocacy at the Montreal SPCA, says times are changing and sentences need to be tougher. She is hoping for the maximum sentence of $10,000 and 18 months in prison.

This is the min. he should be getting. There were other choices - SPCA would have taken them all in. To many people in Quebec get away with abusing and it has to stop.

This is not an isolated incident. This man claims that he 'acted out of desperation'... but the truth is that he lacked empathy for these creatures and lacked knowledge! Tougher punishment will be a wake up call for all those who think animals can be disposed of like trash. Also, it's the education of the population about animals, period!.. We need to start in elementary schools. Teach the children about the cruelty, the puppy mills and today's reality to caring for the animals, our resources and options. They have feelings, they rely on us. Let's make the next generation a better one! Everyone can make a difference by simply opening up a conversation with family, friends, coworkers, neighbours... Word of mouth goes a long way!
