A former president of the Quebec Association of Police Officers has been named to the senate.

Jean-Guy Dagenais, who ran for the Tories in the last election, was defeated.

A former Quebec Liberal MNA is also a senator now.

Ghislain Maltais represented the Saguenay riding from 1983 to 1994.

Five other senate appointments have been made.

They include Ottawa's chief of police, Vern White, Betty Unger, who won a vote in 2004 in Alberta to fill a senate seat, Norman Doyle, a former Conservative MP in Newfoundland, JoAnne Buth, president of the Canola Council of Canada and Asha Seth, a doctor and philanthropist from Toronto.
