Winter weather makes a mess of roads
A storm system is set to dump snow, freezing rain and possibly rain on the Montreal area between now and late Friday afternoon.
The latest word from Environment Canada is we'll see about 10 to 12 centimetres of snow accumulation by the time the storm system moves out, with slightly more snow expected north of Montreal, and less snow south and east of here.
In Montreal, the weather office is predicting snow during the afternoon on Thursday, followed by freezing drizzle or rain beginning around the supper hour and continuing overnight. All of that is expected to change over to snow by Friday afternoon.
However it all shakes out, your rush hours for the rest of the workweek will be messy, to say the least.
Road conditions a mess
Transport Quebec says it does have road crews out on the province's highways, but as of Thursday afternoon, most roads in and around Montreal are at least party snow covered, with visibility fair to good. Conditions are expected to get worse, of course, if the freezing rain that's expected materializes.
Meanwhile, winter weather is affecting air travel not only in Montreal, but in cities that are in the path of this storm, including Toronto, Ottawa and destinations in the Maritimes. Trudeau airport is reporting about a dozen cancellations and about as many delays for today.
