MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens have hired former NHL forward Gerard Gallant as an assistant coach.

The move is the latest in a series of changes made by the Canadiens since Marc Bergevin was named the club's new general manager last month.

Assistants Randy Cunneyworth and Randy Ladouceur were fired last week, a day after Michel Therrien was hired as head coach.

A native of Summerside, P.E.I, Gallant spent 11 seasons in the NHL, nine with the Detroit Red Wings and two with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In 615 games, he recorded 480 points with 1,674 penalty minutes.

Gallant, 48, is a former head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

This team is clearly run by Separatists now. All Francophones hired. Funny how not one Anglophone or Allophones was good enough for the jobs since Quebecois are more in a position of power on this team then ever before.

@Paul L Paul L, stop creating problems where there are none. Montreal has not hired only French people since changing GM's. Rick Dudley and Scott Mellanby were also hired and they are not French only.

Great news for our rivals. None of the new staff have a background of success anywhere at NHL level (former Stanley cup winners as players don't count). A mediocre coaching staff for a mediocre team, looks like a good match though. Another early spring ahead but the good news is there will be no riots in the streets from the hockey fans at least.

Not sure its being run by separatists but there seems no effort to go out and get the best available staff for the franchise, but why bother when the fans will fill the arena regardless. As far as being distinct yes we are "distinctly poorly managed" and that does not look like changing anytime soon.
