Maintenance work, aging pipes caused rash of water main breaks

Last night's rash of water main breaks throughout the city was caused by maintenance work being done at the Atwater filtration plant.

The city says for a time overnight, they had to increase water pressure, and the breaks happened in some of the aging pipes that weren't able to handle the increase.

No less than nine breaks happened during the night, mainly in the east end, but also in places like Verdun and Cote-des-Neiges.

The city is assuring people that everything is now back to normal.
