Student strike to resume in mid August

Posted By: Luciano Pipia · 7/4/2012 8:09:00 PM

A Quebec student leader says the student strike over rising tutiions will resume August 17th.

That's the same day classes are schedued to resume at more than a dozen CEGEPS.

Martine Desjardins, leader of a university student group, predicts an election campaign will be underway by then, that the walkout will be overshadowed by the election battle.

Desjardins adds it seems clear to students that premier Charest wants to use the dispute as an election issue.

Mediation has been proposed.

Tuition is scheduled to go up by nearly 18-hundred dollars over seven years.

Do you really believe Quebec taxpayers give a damn about your juvenile childish actions any more? Grow up, get a job and pay taxes like the rest of us!

@alrev I don't know if tax payers give a damn about young generations at all.
Some of them yes, and maybe all of them should.

It is not because you got a job and you accept the corruption of this government that you must be against youngs protests.

Who cares if students go to school ? well, maybe everybody should, their are the workers of tomorrow, and by going at univeristy they bring the intellectual level of society higher.

What is evolution if not making futur better than present ?

if you like this society like it is and don't want it to change, it's your right.
If they don't like it and see that could be better, it's their right. Walking peacefully in the street to express opinion is a right.

This society is not more yours than theirs, and as their are younger, they will pay more for your mistakes than you for theirs.

The less sociaty is educated, the easier the governement can mess up.
Of course we still have our games and our beers, like roman peoples got bread and games.

We should all hope that the biggest amount of people could reach a university level, well, in my choice of society, not in yours apparently.
However, money is already taken from your pockets, not by students, by goverment, and yes govement is already paying a part of universitarian studies, but goverment is paying a lot more in corruption.

Of course italian mafia will never protest in the street and will let you live your taxpayers life quietly. But Corruption is the real problem, the one that our prime minister doesn't want to talk about and that's why he is so happy t hide behind the Student subject.

where do you want your money to go ?
In a total lost of contracts not worthy or in our young generations ?

Well I guess you want it to stay in your own pockets. But at the end, do you wish to see the country totally sold ?

And finally, I want to say that if you would have see some protest, you would see that it is not a student conflict anymore, in the protest you will see young families, students, old people, teachers, lawyers and judges.

It is now a conflict of society. And as you blame them for protesting because they already have something, I blame you for not supporting them, because if you let that goverment go, at the end their will be nothing left for people, only for the richs and higher criminals.

This is not USA, not yet, don't let it become alike.

Must you choose criminals over your own kids, have the dignity to not say it's because your kids don't pay their tax yet.

Alrev, I concur with you completely. The minute the student associations not a (union) they are not or have ever been a legal accredited union in Quebec soiled their delusion by incorporating themselves with the trade unions, anarchist and hooligans. They lost all credibility with the public that subsidizes their education through our tax dollars. Go on strike for ever and pay your bills with a MAC JOB. Ignorance is bliss! While you chew on that BIG MAC. When you earn a living and pay taxes then you can flap your gums. Until then, all those new students that will be registering in the Fall will be taking your place. Stay in your parents basement and wait for the welfare check. Life has already passed you by.

Amazing how delusional these protestors are. Taxpayers are already picking up 83% of the tab for educating these people. That`s somehow so unacceptable that they sabotage their own future for some twisted cause to extort even more money from taxpayers.

Those who want to go back to class should not be obstructed. This is a free world and bullying should be outlawed.

Election campaign will be under way?? These kids should really give the wacky backy a rest and let the smoke clear. The working people of Quebec could care less if you don't go back to school, more money for the other much needed infrastructure projects that are taking place here.

All students should be sent letters requiring them to state their intention to take advantage of the further education on offer. If they accept then they show up for classes and the authorities should allow them access to the facilities. Those that choose not to should be arrested as trouble makers as they will have forfeited the right to protest at that point.

Further education is exactly that and these children have to learn the reality of this which is the rest of the population is not here to sponsor your smart phones, lattes and subways.

If you need and alternative here is one:
All fees to be paid by loans directly paid back to society by yourselves and in full. Life is not a free ride.

These students have won. When election season rolls around, the corrupt Liberals will be replaced with the sympathetic PQ, who will stop the hike. Goes to show what persistence gets you. I respect them for sticking by their guns, and ultimately winning. They know it, the PQ knows it, and the majority of the people who plan on voting for the PQ know it.

Well done students! If only the Occupy people can go take a shower and apply the same sort of pressure to this corrupt government.

This is a perfect example of how the little guy can stand up against the large corrupt government, and defeat them.

@Thomas They have not won. LOL
The perceived "support" from the PQ will end if the PQ gets elected.
The hike will not be stopped, once in power the PQ will keep the hike and it will be business as usual. Marois has even hinted that and this is why she no longer wears the red square in support of the students. The PQ needs the student vote, that is all. Once they get elected, they don't need the students anymore, and has no reason to try and appease these greedy little troublemakers.

@Thomas Wrong Thomas they will have succeeded in turning the province back over 10 years if the PQ is successful. We will see plummeting house prices and soaring taxes to pay for the election promises they will offer the voters to vote for them. People should remember their leader was instrumental in dismantling the healthcare system last time around. All they will do if they offer a different deal to the students is to recoup it elsewhere through passive taxes.
The PQ are just wolves in sheep clothing and although they will claim the present government is corrupted they also had many chances to change things in the past. Lets hope the people look at this the same way they looked at the Montreal Mayor election, better the devil you know. I'm not a great fan of the liberals but i would rather go forward with the present leader than step into the unknown with any of the alternatives at a time when we are on the brink of another world crisis.
