Quebec's two-week summer construction holiday has begun and while many are thinking of getting away, police are thinking safety.

Provincial police say they're increasing efforts to ensure travel safety during traditional annual break

SQ Sargeant Daniel Thibodeau says it's a multi-faceted approach.

"People can expect to see us on roads, as well as waterways and in the air, as we have our aerial service that's gonna help us apply the highway code in areas that are more difficult to reach. The 6,500 operations, that represents about 11-thousand man hours", says Thibodeau.

Thibodeau adds about 700 more operations will be carried out during the same period targetting impaired driving.

Among police tips, slow down.

Thibodeau suggests parents to talk thier kids about road safety.

"They see a lot more and they observe a lot more of our habits behind the wheel than we think they do", says Thibodeau.

21 people died during last summer's construction break.
