Rona rejects takeover offer Lowe's

Rona Inc. has received and rejected an unsolicited takeover offer from Lowe's Companies that values the Canadian home improvement retailer at about $1.76 billion.

The Montreal-area company says the offer from its American rival wouldn't be in its shareholders' best interest and Rona
will be looking at other options.

Rona says it received the offer nearly a month ago, on July 8 and told Lowe's last week on July 26 that it was rejecting the proposal.

Takeover rumours have circulated before but Rona only announced the approach from Lowe's on Tuesday before stock markets opened.

Rona says Lowe's is offering to acquire all its shares for $14.50 each, more than $2.50 per share above Rona's closing stock price on Monday.

Rona shares closed Monday at $11.87 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Quebec government steps in.....why this is private business matter......Oh I get it why should there be any competition beween home depot-reno if they survive and loewes. As usual the consumer never wins and pays through the teeth. True we have to keep ovepaying for what others pay less for because Quebec and most of Canada will let the midde class survive just to pay for the rest.Target went through because Zeller.'s was dead the minute Walmart crossed he border and it was costing the government to much to keep it a float, but with Rona too much is at stake in Quebec especially at election time.

It seems that Lowe's would have retained the Rona banner as well as the local head office. If Lowe's decides to open new stores with the Lowe's banner, what will Rona shares be worth?
