Move over starting Sunday

Starting Sunday, it will be the law.

If a police car or other emergency vehicle has its lights flashing on the shoulder of the highway, you will have to slow down and if it's safe, move over to create a buffer lane.

If you don't, you face a $200 to $300 fine and 4 demerit points.

It's called the Move Over law and 7 other provinces and 49 US states have similar rules in place.

Since 2009, 13 police officers were hurt and 4 died when their cars were hit while they were on the shoulder.

This law makes sense, it already existed but without the levees (fines). The problem is; what about traffic lights. I know people who have gotten a ticket for breaking the line at a red light to move over for emergency vehicles and and actually lost in court. Which law do you choose in that case? Do you take the ticket for going through a red light or do you take the ticket for not moving out of the way of emergency vehicles. They will have to clarify this for either law to be effective or both will be challenged until they get it right. I understand I live in the province of Quebec, where we are legislated to our collective knees, but the government has got to start becoming more logical and dealing with things much more intellegently. Like checking to see what they are doing makes complete sense and to stop doing things the lazy, half thinking ways.
