Francois Legault skates on referendum questions
It was the morning after the final debate of the election campaign. Reporter after reporter, in French and in English, tried to pin the CAQ leader on what he meant last night when he said "we can't lose another referendum". Francois Legault could only insist, time and again, that a citizen-initiated sovereignty referendum, as described in the PQ platform, would be a losing proposition for the Yes side. But more than that, he said: all Quebecers, federalists and sovereignists, would be the losers if there were another referendum.
Reporters then asked what a CAQ Opposition in the National Assembly would do if the PQ won the election and a sovereignty referendum were called. Legault sought to evade the question, dismissing it as "hypothetical", and limiting himself to repeating his mantra that if there were a referendum, he, for one, would vote "no".
