Voting problems in several areas

Posted By: Jason Mayoff · 9/4/2012 1:49:00 PM

We're starting to get quite a few phone calls in the newsroom, about people who are having trouble casting their ballots.

At one station in Dollard several people were told they coudn't vote because they weren't on the list.

In the Plateau, the lights went out because of a gas leak in the area, and people had to vote by candlelight and flashlight.

At a polling place in TMR, where several people have been told their names are not on the list or have already been crossed off, as if they've already voted.

Neighbor and myself were refused voting privilege due to names not appearing on electoral list. I just moved to new address on Aug. 1st. I did recieve a card at my address which was addressed to Elector. I had my lease, my Hydro bill and proper ID. We were asked to wait while they called the main office on Notre Dame. After waiting for an hour we were told that since we are not on list we could not vote. They said that the best they could do was to have us fill out a form and we could vote in next elections. Is there any other recourse that you might know about that would enable us to vote in today's election?

@Claudine Bonin Unless your family name is Mr or Mrs Elector, you should have checked it out.

If you just moved on August 1st, it is your responsibility to check this stuff out before the last day.

      It's just common sense.

This doesn't surprise me after what was done at the 1995 referendum, they now have come up with new more improved methods to not let the "money and the ethnics" vote

Here in St. Eustache when we went to vote they asked for proof of address. Earlier this morning the elections officer talking to Andrew Carter said a Quebec medical card with your picture was sufficient. We were able to handle the situation, but it was a tad disturbing.

I, too, was told I and my wife were not on "the list" yet our 18 year old daughter was. I was told a form went out in 2009 (!!) to confirm I was still at my address which I "must not have returned". So I guess, according to elections Quebec, my 18 year old lives by herself in a house; with no income, mind you. I was going to spoil my ballot anyway

Had a similar problem at the Terrasse Vaudreuil voting station. I was not on the list and despite bringing THREE pieces of proof of address, they would not let me vote. I strongly believe that had I been francophone, I would have gotten proper service. I am SO done with this province. Ontario, here I come!

I was told today in Ville LaSalle that I am not on the list to vote. I'm 35 years old, always filed my taxes and lived at the same address for 6 years... But I'm not on their list??? CJAD's talk show hosts convinced me to out and vote and this is what I had to deal with:( not pleased, not impressed, and not sure I will go again. I've always trusted my fellow Quebecers to vote for the right team ( who are all similar to me anyway?)

i put it on my facebook & i had at-least 10 of my friend say the same, 1 saying she went & they said she already voted??? funny thing is..they were all English!

Well.... Another lost vote as I was not on the list. 2 weeks ago I was on the list, but I guess it was magic ink. Does this mean that I don't have to pay taxes anymore?

@Rosie Yes, I am surprised. Rosie, you are paranoid. Leave the province. The Anglophones here don't want or need your support.

How is it that I have been voting for 22 years but tonight I was turned away from my D'arcy McGee voting station??!! I am completely gobsmacked!

Went to vote today only to be told my name was not on the list. According to the people working the Greendale post, this has been happening all day. I, like all the others who were not on the list, was given a # to call where I can complain. I was told complaining won't get me anywhere but at least I'll be on the list for the next election in 4 yrs.

I went to my polling station to vote and was told the same thing I am not on the voters list, funny how everyone else in my household was on that list but me. I guess I need to stop ticking the box to send all my info in english when I do my taxes. I have been on a list every year but this one. I am pretty sure that if all of Quebecer's were able to vote last night it would of been a totally different outcome.

I also had trouble getting my vote in out in Villeray, but I learned over the last couple of weeks and addressed them in French; my last name is very Anglophone however. They said they'd find me and I just had a wait a few minutes. I was able to vote, but my mother and grandmother, in Pointe-Claire, were not on the list either (my mum has been at the same address for 25 years and my nana for 15 years), they addresses the people there in English and were told there was nothing they could do. When she called to tell me this, I was very surprised and disgusted, as they ended up finding me on their list and I think it's likely because I spoke in French whereas they spoke in English. This does not bode well, but at least the PQ didn't get majority.

Perhaps if everyone who was refused their right to vote for not having their name upon the list were to complain to the Liberal Party the Liberal party could themselves file a complaint to Elections QC and make something out of it.

That being said francophones and not only anglos encountered the same problem.
    1. Paul posted on 09/07/2012 10:41 PM
@Murray Yeah, maybe the Liberals will call in the Rizzutos tp fix the problem.

You people are completely out to lunch. Call in the Liberals?? They MADE these rules, you idiots.

I made sure I was on the list BEFORE the election.

If a single person who was turned away had done that I would be disturbed. It sounds like you never put yourselves on the list. I am sure there are plenty of francophones who similarily did not put themselves on the list and were also disappointed on election day. Chill people.

Please do not let the door hit your arse on the way out, you reactionary, paranoid idiot.

I worked the polls. We turned away everyone who was not on the voter's list -- including ***gasp*** .... FRANCOPHONES!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup, you will fit in great in Toronto, drooling and frothing over how great Rob Ford is.
