Jean Charest steps down as Liberal leader

Posted By: CJAD · 9/5/2012 4:39:00 PM

Jean Charest is stepping down as Quebec Liberal leader after 14 years, including nine as premier.

Charest made the announcement in Quebec City today, a day after losing his own seat in the provincial election and seeing his party form the official Opposition.

Charest came to the Liberals in 1998 from the federal Progessive Conservatives where he served as leader.

He was first elected as an MP in Brian Mulroney's first Conservative wave in 1984.

Including that victory, Charest won eight consecutive elections in Sherbrooke, four federal and four provincial, before losing
yesterday.

Charest prided himself during his three mandates as premier as a sound economic manager, particularly during the 2008 economic crisis that rocked the world.

Good riddance to Robert Bourassa's twin..Like Bourassa, Charest, followed the Liberal tradition of shafted the non francophones that put him in power by sating he is a federalist but doing more for separation or should I say "sovereignty association" then the PQ or any other nationalist political party has done, which is all we have in Quebec.
Just like Bourassa, Charest contributed in the turning on Montreal from a world class city and economic power into a bush league town.
Hopefully another politician will arise, recall what Montreal was in the late 60's and early 70's and make this city world class once more and give more credit to the francophone that are truly proud of their language and culture and willing to preserve it racist laws that will fail in due time.
