Canadian soldiers in hot water over Facebook rants
Four soldiers based in Valcartier, near Quebec City, are due before a military court for allegedly posting hateful comments on Facebook.
The four unidentified soldiers, members of the Valcartier-based 5th Mechanized Brigade, landed in hot water over comments they allegedly posted on Facebook during last spring's series of student protests. The comments in question condemned the protests and applauded the injuries to some of the students involved in confrontations with the police. It's reported one of the soldiers called the students "weaklings" and "communists" who should be sent to concentration camps. Another invited the students to go protest at Aushwitz.
Canadian Forces officials say the four are charged with conduct unbecoming members of the Canadian Forces. The offences could bring punishment ranging from a reprimand to house-arrest of up to 14 days.
Courts martial are to be convened in Valcartier next month.
