New doubts about future of Cavendish extension

A Cote St. Luc city councillor is casting doubt over the future of plans to extend Cavendish boulevard.

Dida Berku tells the Gazette that those plans have disappeared from the city's three-year capital budget, and there's no explanation as to why.

The extension, which had been talked about for decades, finally appeared to be one step closer to becoming a reality earlier this year, when a deal was struck between the city and the province that would also see the site of the former Blue Bonnets racetrack turned into a new residential neighborhood.

But NDG-Cote des Neiges borough mayor Michael Applebaum tells the paper the deal was conditional on money coming from the province. He now says he doesn't think that'll happen.

Earlier this week, NDG MNA Kathleen Weil told CJAD News she and four other recently re-elected west-end Liberal MNAs would continue to push for the extension, even with a new PQ government about to be sworn in in the coming days.

It's common knowledge that the Cavendish extension, which would come as a life saver to congestion in Montreal, has been blocked for decades by the powerful lobby of wealthy Cote St Luc residents who only care about their pocket book. It's about time our road planning took into account the interests of all Montrealers and not just the wealthy ones.
