Laval mayor threatened; one man under arrest

Montreal police arrested a 36-year-old man late last night, for making some sort of phone threat against Laval mayor Gilles Vaillancourt.

The man was then turned over to Laval police for questioning.

He was apparently drunk and incoherent when he made the threats, but nonetheless, Laval police searched city hall with sniffer dogs, as a precaution. Nothing suspicious was found.

Vaillancourt also turned up at a news conference in Laval this morning with two extra police officers guarding him.

"We don't want to take any chances," said Laval police spokesperson Nathalie Lorrain. "It's normal procedure when things like that happen."
