Costco beef recall

Posted By: Canadian Press · 9/17/2012 3:21:00 PM

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning against the consumption of several brands of ground beef from XL Foods of Alberta because of possible E.coli contamination.

The beef was sold under the Kirkland Signature brand, which is carried by Costco stores across Canada.

It was also sold under the Safeway and Calahoo Meats brands in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C.

The agency said Monday there have been no reported illnesses linked to the product, which is being recalled voluntarily by Edmonton-based XL Foods.

The company said it is committed to food safety and recalled the meat even though it believes the risk of contamination is ``very low.''

The CFIA said it doesn't know exactly which stores _ or how many _ have been carrying the affected product.

Garfield Balsom, a CFIA food safety and recall specialist, said it's ``hard to pinpoint'' the quantity of beef being recalled, but noted it is ``fairly substantive'' given the product was distributed across the country.

Consumers wishing to know the exact products being recalled should visit the CFIA's website at www.inspection.gc.ca.

Consumption of food contaminated with E. coli bacteria can cause serious, and even life-threatening illnesses.

Symptoms typically include severe abdominal pain and diarrhea.

I received a call from Costco letting me know that the meat I purchased may be contaminated with E coli, Well might be is not the word I was out of commission with abdominal pain and a serious case of diarehea, The costco I purchased my meat was the Bridge street location in downtown montreal. I had other members of the family with milder cases of diareea. Made spaghetti sauce with the meat had to throw out the rest of the meat.

I purchased ground beef from Costco on Sept. 9, 2012. We consumed some and didn't suffer any effects from it. But, tonight we got a recorded phone call from Costco, telling us to discard the remainder of the meat, because of the possibilty of E-coli contamination in meat provided by XL Meats. So I discarded about 5 pounds that I had frozen for future use. I admire the system that keeps track of purchasers so they can be notified of problems. That fact alone is a good reason to pay the membership fee at Costco!

Luckily, the portion we consumed did not make us ill (or worse). So far.

Why does it take TEN DAYS for these findings to reach the consumer? Obviously, tests done on the meat resulted in this recall. So why are those tests not done BEFORE the meat is put on the retail counter for sale? Does it really take that long to get the results of the tests? A lot of people could have been affected in that ten days.

These recalls are becoming far too frequent! We hear warnings on the news every two or three months or so.

Please look into this matter and let the public know the answers in the near future. I doubt anyone will want to purchase any ground beef in the future without some kind of guarantee that it is safe to eat!
