Unions worry about closing Gentilly-2

Unions representing Hydro-Quebec workers are concerned about the closing of the Gentilly-2 plant.

The unions say they have been blindsighted and have no idea what plan the government has in place to shut down the nuclear plant in Becancour.

"There was no consultation, there is no plan, so many questions right now and no answers," says Ginette Paul with the Canadian Union for Public Employees.

800 people currently work at the nuclear plant. The unions say they will add to an already high unemployment rate in the Mauricie region.

"Where will they all go?" asks Michel Bibeault of the FTQ. "That is our fear right now."

The unions say the economic impact on the region will be huge. They are asking for a meeting with Premier Pauline Marois and the energy minister to discuss their concerns.

On the one hand, Marois wants to promote electric vehicles and less dependence on fossil fuels. On the other she wants to shut down electric power generation and add to the already high unemployment rate. I'm guessing she was never very good at simple math. Thank god she is in a minority position. I don't think she has made a single intelligent decision yet.

Although the PQ deemed it necessary that extraction of shale would require another lengthy assessment, it doesn't seem like they put much thought into the effects of shutting G2. The PQ is on track to being one of the most immature governing bodies in Canada. It's comparable to giving a 16 year old the keys to a sports car. Unfortunately Canadian tax payers are that 16 year olds parents and that car isn't insured.
