Marois set to tax the rich

Posted By: Richard Deschamps · 9/22/2012 11:34:00 AM

A spokesperson for premier Pauline Marois says she's planning to enact a tax hike for wealthy Quebecers and for businesses, to make up for the $845 million dollar shortfall caused by Marois' decision to cancel the former Liberal government's $200-per-person health tax.

The hike would target those who make more than $130,000 a year.

The spokesperson, Shirley Bishop, told Quebec City's Le Soleil newspaper that while the premier is aware there might be a confidence test over the changes, the interests of five million Quebecers take precedence over those of several hundred thousand wealthy Quebecers.

Free tuition so you can become a Doctor or Lawyer and then pay for everyone else that didnt go to school as well as for you. Way to go. Were do I sign up??? While we are at it what about FREE french courses for Anglos who have lived here all their lives but need courses instead of just for newcomers to Quebec? Shouldn't the Govt consider that as a good way to help the anglos better themselves since we are such a big part of the Quebec culture?.

    Just a thought or two....

@Angela @Angela, please do not go down the road of free French courses for Anglos who have lived in Quebec all their lives, yet still cannot speak French.

This is ludicrous! Any Anglo that has lived in Quebec all their lives, and still cannot speak French, should be directed to "Go West Young Man/Woman"

I am a born and bred Anglo Quebecer who "got off his butt" and learned the language of the majority. I am not perfect, however I function very well, through my own efforts.

If the only reason that an Anglo cannot speak French is that they need a subsidy to learn the language, then the motivation is missing. If a person really wants to learn French they don't need a subsidy.

There is absolutely no reason for any lifelong Anglo Quebecer, not to be able to speak French!!

@Angela did you know Pauline's children went to a PRIVATE ENGLISH SCHOOL in the STATES...... how ignorant is the population in believing her web of lies....

In good faith, Mrs. Marois should work for free (duration of her term), thus set a good example, then she may tax the rich. As for now she should not be taken in a serious manner. She should ask Ottawa if she may print PQ dollars.

If Marois thinks that $130,000/year household income is wealthy, she must be dreaming!

This shows how out of touch she is with every day reality of Quebec families. Her salary suggestion just makes for a middle income family.

How about making it a more reasonable $300,000 per household? Although this too would hardly make a family of 4 rich, considering all the taxes taken off for a Quebecer. Maybe even a plan like over $80K per family member to make it more fair for family incomes with dependents greater than 1 or 2.

I wonder how much more she plans to tax the middle class to pay for all her new initiatives and plans?

@NadaS this Woman is Poison for Quebec and the red sqare twits will soon realize, that by voting for her they shot in their own foot.... see what it says in European Newspapers (Reuter) about her tax strategy:

In its study, the C.D. Howe Institute said taxpayers faced with the threat of higher levies would likely take steps to lower their taxable income.
"The proposed increases would create much less new tax receipts than the government expects," according to Alexandre Laurin, Associate Director of Research at the CD Howe institute.
He said Quebec should not expect federal government transfers to make up for any shortfall in provincial tax revenues.
"Over the long term, declining economic activity and investment would lead to the relative impoverishment of Quebec society," said Laurin.

@NadaS here is an example of what other Newspapers think about the Marois tax grab.... (dont we have any economists left in this province to explain to her the stunpidity of her strategy )

TORONTO (Reuters) - Quebec's plan to scrap a general health levy and pay for it by boosting taxes on the rich could cut provincial government revenues by C$800 million ($810 million) a year, according to a study released on Tuesday by a conservative Canadian think tank.

If that's the case Shirley Bishop, then why did she cancel the tuition hikes when the money from that will have to come from 5 million Quebecor's?

I have had enough. I am leaving with my business and the $60K in Quebec income taxes I pay per year.

So how about that ? Who wouldn't have guessed that would be one of her first moves.
Don't you now wish you had voted Liberal in the last fiasco? I mean election... and there's more to come. You think so called students will be blocking traffic and banging pots late at night so you and your kids can't get to sleep for work and school ? Will they be trespassing onto college campuses and offices to which
they do not belong? Who will bang pots in the national assembly ? Who says
$130,000 a year makes you wealthy? That's less than $75,000 per year take home!
Taxes are already way too high. Elimnate draconian institutions like L'Office if you
want to save money. Beware of this monority government. I hope it will be very
    short lived.

So doctors and engineers who work like dogs to support their family will have to pay thousands more per year so that students can save $200 per year in tuition. Great plan.

It seems as though the entitled children of our society have won again. It also seems that having the lowest tuition rates wasn’t enough. Nothing will ever be good enough for those who can cause a fuss. So if our doctors and lawyers and all the professionals in our province go on strike like the students, what then? Will we then return the cost where it belongs? I am not opposed to paying for my child’s education and I think that at our tuition rates, this slight increase was us getting off easy. Now that the PQ holds the reins we are in for a whole lot of trouble. She will obviously do this to please the students that voted for her, that’s how she got here in the first place and although this election none of the choices seemed appealing we managed to go from bad to worse.
We have a hard enough time keeping our doctors in Quebec as we pay them some of the lowest salaries, as with our nurses and then we turn around and raise their taxes? I’d like to see if this causes the higher income families to go on strike, like the students did what she will do then. But they won’t because they are not part of the self-important, entitled generation that we have brought up.

It is simple. If you move across the border to Ontario before Dec 31st, your taxes are filed in Ontario. This means that poor Pauline will not get to see your taxes, but Ontario will. Not only that! You will receive all the taxes you over paid in Quebec when you file. Land of opportunity "Ontario" Your's to discover Qubecers and business', and middle class. Sorry Welfare recipients, we have enough of our own.. Good luck!

As a headhunter, I meet allot of candidates who refuse job offers because it doesn’t pay them much more than being on chomage.
So I say great Pauline Marois!!, you have just encouraged the lazy to become lazier and punish the rich for working hard.
I don’t come from money, and my family was far from rich but we had drive and motivation and worked really hard to get where we are
SO thank you for stripping my motivation
Being successful requires many hours ..more than the average 40hour week; surely if some people worked more than that maybe they would be rich as welll!!

Instead of encouraging laziness we should motivate the RICH to move here by keeping taxes at a reasonable level, this way, there would be more taxes generated

One question the PQ should ponder on….
Who will help the less fortunate if the Rich move out of Quebec?? we do contribute close to 1 billion dollars.
Who will you tax then..The POOR!!!

I earn well over $ 200K a year. I will move to Ontario boarder and save 11,821 per $130,000 as it is, just on current Provincial tax levels. I can still work in Quuebec but will have my residence in Ontario as a Sales Manager who is self employed! But yes I like being French and its my first language. Lets not mix up French culture with taxation.

Which of the below is true:

    a) Tax payers earning $130,000 or even $250,000 for that matter and paying their full share of income taxes in many cases are no better off than many others earning less but paying even lower (or no!) taxes.

    b) Tax payers earning above $130,000 already pay more than their fair share of taxes, and are the heaviest taxed in North America

    c) If Mme Marois is successful with her planned tax hike, enough high earners will eventually leave the province that the policy will wind up creating a net short fall in taxes. Too bad one those tax payers won't have the opportunity to leave the province retroactively!

The answer? All of the above.

My opinion which no one has touched on yet is : The Provincial Government needs to find money, well they should look inward to the waste in Government before coming after any taxpayor.

Phew! Never in my whole life have I ever been as happy as I am now not to be wealthy. If I were though I would move my business and myself to Ontario. If I could not move the business to Ontario I would move it to the West Island (if not already there) and still move myself! According to the HEC, Quebec will soon be Canada's poorest province! Marois is simply sppeding up the day that it will be.

I wonder why she didnt set the line at $120,000

Do you think that maybe its because MPs make about $120,000 and they dont want to have to pay the extra tax?

Thsi idea of higher taxes for anyone making 130K and more.
    1. It will not motivate anyone to succeed and get rich in Quebec.
    2. it will keep everyone unmotivated and uniterested to make money succeed or expand in Quebec, because there is no insentive all the extra monwy they wll make will just go to the PQ.
    3. No new investors will move to Quebec.
    4. Any wealthy company or person will attempt to leave, create a tax haven, move, have an address in Ontario etc.
5.Quebec will becom more and more poor with less and less of a tax base.
6.Those wealthy will move and they will take all the jobs they create with them so more and more people not just the wealthy will be poorer and poorer.
    7. Very bad idea all around. A government should be trying to attract money and business. This govenment is insane period!!!!!!completely irresponsible and pathetic. They dont know what tehy are doing It will destroy Quebec.
But maybe thats what the PQ wants get rid of all ANglo Allo and wealthy then we can have our country. Because who votes for us ??? The loserson BS

To save thousands and tens of thousands of income tax, Montrealers can simply move to Hawkesbury or Alexandria Ontario just accross the border. Every Montreal-Ottawa, Ottawa-Montreal CN Via train stops in Alexandria so daily commuting couldn't be easier. The monthly pass is a bargain and it's tax-deductible. Morning and evening buses all also run from Hawkesbury to Montréal. Health care is great and finding a family doctor is easy, many Montreal doctors have already made the move across the border. Driving to Ottawa is easier too, so why aren't more Montrealers making the move, I already have.

Go ahead Marois, tax the high income earners more. You will see more and more professionals and high income earners leaving the province and being able to make more money elsewhere. This will put more and more pressure to come up with revenue from a dwindling tax base. In Quebec, it is not $130,000 that is considered to make you a rich person, in Quebec, anyone making more than $50,000 is considered rich. Increasing taxes is the government's answer to everything.

Many doctors are already leaving the province in droves because of the lower salaries compared to other provinces/countries and the onerous work conditions faced by new doctors when they graduate and fulfill their residency requirements.

This province is headed towards becoming a welfare state if it is not already one.

of course she now has to find ways to come up with the Money she pomissed to the red square gang to make them vote for her (little did they now the consequences...) If there are kind of honest workers in quebec that make over
130 K (she does) they will flee very fast....I take confort in the thought, that her reign will only be an insignificant blip in the context of the big picture. The so called rich she is chasing out of la belle province will spend their money (and taxes) elsewhere in CANADA She already using the same old adage like all newly elected parties.... we did not know how much in s...... our predecessors left us....
