City councillor takes issue with Yom Kippur council shutdown

An opposition city councillor says shutting down council activities for the Yom Kippur holiday represents an unreasonable accomodation.

Villeray-St. Michel-Park Extension borough mayor Anie Samson, speaking for Vision Montreal, told the Gazette that while she recognizes the significance of the Jewish high holidays, shutting down council to accomodate just a few councillors sets a dangerous precedent.

City council activities are scheduled to halt Tuesday night, when the holiday begins, and resume Thursday morning.

I wonder what the city council would do if Christmas or Easter would fall on a typical work day? I do believe that since they are asking for 1 day and not a whole week, it hardly seems unreasonable. Afterall no one is suggesting that the blue collar workers should stop working only that council take a break.

If she understands how important it is what is her problem? This is not the first time they have shut for Yom Kippur I am sure. They do close for Christmas don't they?
