The history lessons on the origins of the Italian mafia and of the mafia here in Montreal are now giving way to the real business of the Charbonneau Commission on Collusion and Corruption in the construction industry.

RCMP corporal Vinitio Sebastiano named people active in the construction industry who were recorded delivering bags of money to Montreal mafia leaders at two Montreal-area bars -- the Consenza Social Club in Saint-Leonard and the Laennec Bar in Laval -- between 2004 and 2006.

Among those identified: Michel Argento of Paramount Paving, Tony Magi of FTM Construction and Francesco Catania of Catania Construction.

The transactions were noted during the Operation Colisee investigation aimed at shutting down the Montreal mafia's drug trafficking and bookmaking operations.

Curiously, the RCMP, according to Sebastiano, did not listen to eavesdropped conversations involving the construction industry. The RCMP corporal explained that such matters were not of police inrterest at that time.
