Should a Montreal police officer go to jail for fraud?

A Montreal courtroom heard arguments Friday on how to punish a Montreal homicide detective for fraud.

The crown says 44-year-old Sgt.-Det. Mario Lambert should go to jail for 6 to 12 months for what he did, citing breach of trust, the seriousness of the crime, and Lambert's lengthy experience on the force.

He was found guilty of passing along confidential information from a police database, something he insists was done as part of a case he was working on.

His lawyer is calling for a sentence to be served in the community, and a conditional discharge.

The defence says Lambert was not helping criminals, but rather fighting crime.

It also suggests his crime had no victims, will not likely remain on the force, and will live with the consequences of the crime for the rest of his life.

Sentencing is set for late November.

He most certainly should do time in jail and receive a criminal record. If you commit fraud, you are a criminal and should face the consequences regardless of being a police officer. In fact, being a police officer, he really should have known better. No hiding behind your badge. You knowingly commited a crime, do the time!!

@Thomas Yes of course he should suffer the consequences just like anyone else. I dont care who you are or what you rank, a crime is a crime.

Just because he is a cop does not make him always right.

Fraud is longer than 6 - 12 months though, I guess it depends on the situation.

If he had committed the crime, then he should be formally charged for the crime committed. The penalty is the part which is up for discussion.

.He should not get off with a lessor sentence because he was a police officer. He should be charged as if he were a citizen , He should also get a ticket....

This is not enough information related to this topic. There should much more content in it about jail for fraud.
