Irving Oil charged in gas-price fixing probe

OTTAWA - Criminal charges have been laid against Irving Oil and a senior company executive for alleged price-fixing at gas stations in three Quebec cities.

The federal Competition Bureau says three charges of conspiracy are being laid against the New Brunswick-based company.

And the same three charges are also being laid against Serge Parent, the company's manager for Quebec.

The scheme allegedly took place in Victoriaville, Thetford Mines and Sherbrooke.

The federal bureau says it uncovered the plan using investigative tools, including wiretaps and searches.

It says it found evidence of gas retailers, or their representatives, communicating with each other to agree on the price they should charge at the pumps.

Wow..I'm surprised. Of course the companies are price-fixing. if not, could this be the BIGGEST coincidence ever ? Give us a break. Do you know what the odds are of every gas station in Montreal having the same gas price at the same time every time without price fixing ??? The Federal Competition Bureau is lacking the "bite" to address this issue properly. Corruption is everywhere. Unfortunately, many of us still have to fill up our tanks and suck this up. I wish I was the king of the world.

Everyone knows the price of gas will go up every Thursay night, sometimes it changes to a Tuesday just to throw us off and again before every long weekend and before construction holiday, etc. After the Charbonneau, how about setting up a commission to check into price gouging.

Believe it or not, high gas costs are as bad for gas stations as they are for drivers, as it means they have to pay more in fees to the credit card businesses. They have been sending on those extra expenses to drivers, who aren't happy with the additional costs. Source for this article: Gas station credit card fees irking motorists.

and the taxes are a percentage of the price, so as the cost at the pump goes up, the government makes more and more, then have to raise tax rates because we don't suffer enough.
