Police say West Island is safe despite recent street gang murder

There are safety concerns on the West Island following a murder there recently.

29-year old Jonathan Castilho, a known street gang member, died earlier in the week.

He was found unconscious in the parking lot of a Beaconsfield train station and then died in hospital.

Some have wondered if, perhaps, the West Island is becoming a crime hotbed.

"All the west island, there's no more problem than anywhere else", says police commander Antonio Ianantuoni, the west island's point man on street gangs.

He says street gangs are scattered across the island.

And he has this message for West Island residents.

"I can assure you that the whole west island remains a safe area".
