Regie green lights controversial smart hydro meters

Quebec's energy board has given Hydro-Quebec the go-ahead to start working on plans for smart meters, all the while giving the consumers the choice to opt out.

The plan is to replace 3.75 million hydro meters with the new technology by 2018.

The meters emit electromagnetic signals which transmit meter information to Hydro's offices.

Hydro says the new metering system would cut costs, alert the utility to power failures, and help consumers better manage their energy consumption, among other things.

Critics suggest the new meters, and the radiation they emit, can cause health problems.

I hope they don't charge us extra to opt out. We don't want it! Maybe only the well off will be able to opt out if they do charge us. I have read so much about the health problems caused by a not so smart meter. I think the P.Q. should ban these meters from residential buildings. I really thought they would not let this go through. Lets have a referendum on this. People should go on the internet and read about the problems they can cause. Hydro says it will cut costs but only for them, not for the consumer. I guess they will cut costs because the meter readers will be losing their jobs. Imagine how many that will be! They make so much profit already, and will make even more by eliminating jobs. We manage our energy consumption just fine now. A smart meter won't make a difference. Only to our health.
