Rizzuto lands in Toronto

Reputed Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto arrived in Toronto late Friday night, but his current whereabouts are unknown.

The 66-year old Rizzuto was released from a Colorado prison Friday morning after an eight year stint.

Peel Regional Police constable George Tudos says officers were waiting when Rizzuto landed at Pearson International Airport aboard an Air Canada flight.

He said that due to Rizzuto's history police wanted to ensure he arrived safe and that everyone at the airport was also safe.

Tudos said the reputed Mafia boss, now being a free man, soon left the airport -- his destination unknown.

Rizzuto was deemed to be the head of a powerful criminal organization when he was arrested in 2004.

But the Montreal-based organization was battered during Rizzuto's time in prison -- scores of his associates were arrested, and many others were killed.

Rizzuto's father and his son were both gunned down, and his brother-in-law has been missing for two years.

In addition, the business dealings of the Rizzutos are now under intense scrutiny at a Quebec inquiry into corruption in the construction industry.
