Cyclist injured in late night accident

A 24-year old man  suffered serious head injuries after being involved in a collision with a van while riding his bike in the Plateau late last night.
Poklice say it appears the cyclist ran a red light at St-Urbain and Milton and was struck by the van travelling south.
Police say the cyclist was not wearing a helmet.

This is sad, but I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. There are countless kamikaze-style cyclists in this city.

I love cycling too, but if you value your life, please stop at red lights, and it's always a good idea to wear a helmet especially with all the agressive taxi drivers around.

I find it terrifying driving sometimes, because you're never sure where cyclists are. I have had many cyclists pull expectantly in front of my moving vehicle to make a left turn from the far right hand lane. There is a bike path in my neighborhood with stop signs for the cyclists since it's a busy intersection and in the six months I've lived there, I've yet to see a cyclist stop at these signs, which has caused many near-accidents and even a few collisions. I bike as well, but you have to remember you're a vehicle as well and must obey the same traffic laws as cars. I'm starting to think the fines for such things should be higher to discourage this dangerous behavior many cyclists have developed.

It amazes me that some cyclists choose not to wear a helmet. His own irresponsibility almost took his life away. No helmet + kamikaze (doesn't stop for red) + nightime. That's the formula for death. And what about the guy who hit him ? I bet the memory of running down another person is something he'll remember for a long time. I feel sorry for the cyclist and the driver.

Message to cyclists - it doesn't always happen to someone else. Next time it could be you. Be prudent.
