PQ plotting 'political takeover' of schools: Liberals

MONTREAL - Quebec's opposition is accusing the new Parti Quebecois government of planning to turn the province's schools into political assembly lines for churning out supporters.

It reacted angrily to news Thursday that the PQ will decrease English instruction on its list of priorities and increase teaching the history of Quebec's sovereignty movement.

The two bigger opposition parties condemned the announcement by Education Minister Marie Malavoy.

"What she's saying is that, for Quebec's schools, it's less English and more sovereignty,'' said the Liberals' interim leader,
Jean-Marc Fournier.

"Her desire to proceed with a political takeover of our schools must be vigorously resisted.''

He said the policies are inspired by the PQ's hardline wing, not by what's best for Quebec.

Fournier was reacting to remarks by Malavoy, who outlined some of her plans in a newspaper interview.

She said she wants to abolish the practice of mandatory English lessons starting in Grade 1; slow down the implementation of intensive English in Grade 6; and change a high-school history course to increase the focus on the national-unity debate.

In an interview with The Canadian Press, Malavoy reiterated that she supports English instruction.

She just questioned whether the education system was ready for the reforms being prepared by the previous Liberal government, which wanted to introduce intensive English sessions across the province for sixth graders by 2015.

Malavoy said she has been receiving reports about complications with implementing the program.

"Intensive English is something we look kindly upon,'' Malavoy said. "(But) what do we do with students who have learning difficulties? Until we've answered some of these questions I can't see how we would say, 'We're staying the course,' and it'll be
uniform across Quebec in 2015...I absolutely hope that Quebec students learn English and learn it well. With respect to the objective, I'm not calling it into question at all.''

But her opponents called into question her priorities.

The Coalition party described the plan as a step in the wrong direction for Quebec. One Coalition critic said it would deprive young Quebecers of a critical "tool'' for success in the 21st century economy.

"We need to stop looking at English as Lord Durham and the Plains of Abraham,'' Gerard Deltell said, referring to the 18th century Seven Years' War in which the United Kingdom gained control of France's Canadian territories.

"They want to instrumentalize education in service of a political cause.''

This is ridiculous. My stomach literally turned upside down as I read this. I always knew that the PQ wants to keep their society and supporters ignorant but this just proves it. This is very scary, very scary and we cannot allow this to happen. We need another election and quick.

@Joseph ....yes, but be aware of wackos, it was wackos who changedworld history in 1938, wackos who made air travel what it is today, wackos who murdered a quebec labour minister..., wacko leaders who triggered the Arab spring... so if we do not want, that wackos are running our lives, make it known at the ballot box........

    Funny how things happen!
Yesterday, I was substituting in a French highschool in Montreal - teaching English (ESL). I was obviously speaking mostly English to the students translating here and there to make sure they understood the activity that I was trying to do with them. At that point, the principal of the school entered the classroom and told me - in front of the students- that I have to speak French to them. Vous Madam - she told me- vous etes seulement une suppleante. Il faut leur parle francais!
They don't give a damn about learning English!
    Schools are already politicized!!!

Yet more blatant racism from the racist party of Canada. As for teaching about the history of Sovereignty, well that can be covered real quick in one lesson. A bunch of terrorists thought they could change the minds of the Quebec nation by murdering innocent people and failed.

They might be better off to teach them economics so they can figure how they will survive without the huge financial support they receive from the big bad Confederation should they ever get the opportunity.

Some might want to refresh themselves on her own past history: Let's not forget that she had to step down from her position November 25, 1994, as it was found that she had illegally voted during the Quebec Referendum in 1980 as well as other federal and provincial elections since she was not a Canadian citizen at the time.

Now that's a history lesson that is worth teaching. In English or French this is a person with a history of dishonesty hardly a person to be entrusted with the care of our young Quebecor's.

Jean-Marc Fournier is so right about them plotting a political take over in the French schools. I do think that this has been going on for a long time, but getting worse. Teach the youth that sovereignty (separatism) is a good thing, and that learning English and belonging to Canada is a negative thing, and before the next Provincial election lower the voting age to 16 so you will finally get your winning referendum. I wonder if that is the plan. It worked in the schools in Germany in the 1930's. The minister of propaganda joseph goebbels ( I can't bring myself to capitalize the first letters of his name) brainwashed the students into thinking that the Aryan race was superior years before the second world war. Does "Give me your youth and I will give you an army" ring a bell? Look up the German spelling for the national socialism party in Germany in the 30's and 40's. This is how things start by getting them when they are young. They start to think that other races, languages and religions are a threat or inferior so they try to suppress or get rid of them. People demand in public that you stop speaking English and speak French. To me that is arrogant, inconsiderate and hateful! It is also dangerous. People can end up getting into physical situations when they are bullied. As history has proven, things can escalate out of control until there is no going back.

Education Minister Marie Malavoy is basically saying that French Canadian kids are too stupid to learn another language. I don't think so.

Every study of early learners in the world has shown that young children are able to learn very quickly, and when language is taught, they pick it up faster and easier than an older child. As for History, every communist / socialist has tried to change history to put them selves in a positive light. These poor excuses for humans should be tried in a court for crimes against society & human well-being.

especially Maria Malavoy could learn from her Parents where this kind of thinking could lead

The PQ are yet again proving that they are nothing but a bunch of racist xenophobes. We can thank our lucky stars that they are in a minority position. Imagine if these biggots were give free reign ? Lets hope that the opposition brings them down soon.

They still havent realised that promoting French is not the same thing as vilifying English. Living in harmony is not something they strive for. Bunch of narrow minded twits.

The hardliners have no where else to go, trapped in this province and they just want the next generation to be trapped and suffer. Brainwashing 101 here for sure as well!
