Laval wants participant status at Charbonneau Commission

The city of Laval will be asking for participant status at the Charbonneau Commission.

The decision came after several hours worth of discussions by Laval's executive committee.

David deCotis with the city's main opposition party, the Mouvement Lavallois, says mayor Gilles Vaillancourt shouldn't attempt to clear his name on the taxpayers' dime; that either he or his party should pay for that defense.

Why now - when they were advised at the beginning of the process that they were under investigation and why use my money. If corruption exists (and this would seem to be an either it is or it isn't case) then our tax money should not be used to help finance a defense for politicians or civic employees who should be held accountable for actions. When financial statements or documents are requested by citizens they should be made available (either online or in written format) without comments. If people can see this kind of transparency (without politicians saying they can not release it as people would not understand - sound familiar - engineer reports being release for crumbling infrastructure), they would feel a lot more comfortable with their government (at any level).
