Conrad Black in TV interview calls BBC host 'priggish, gullible, British fool'

Former media magnate Conrad Black has suggested in a pair of eyebrow-raising British TV interviews that he could resume his seat in the House of Lords.

In one interview, Black termed a BBC host a fool and talked about ``being able to endure a discussion like this without getting up and smashing your face in.'' In another, he told a Sky News interviewer to ``stop being a jackass.''

In his first appearance, Black told BBC Two's ``Newsnight'' on Monday that the U.S. charges that sent him to prison for close to three years were ``rubbish'' and that he had been ``persecuted half to death.'' Black, who returned to his Toronto home this year after being released from a Florida prison, spoke critically of the U.S. justice system during the interview, describing the American prosecution of him as ``a smear job from A to Z.''

``The whole system is a fraudulent, fascistic conveyor belt of the corrupt prison system,'' a combative Black said. But the chat with Newsnight's Jeremy Paxman became heated when
the host referred to Black as a convicted criminal and Black responded by calling Paxman a ``priggish, gullible, British fool.''

Black renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2001 to become a member of the British House of Lords but was allowed to return to Canada on a temporary resident permit. He was convicted in the United States of fraud and obstruction of justice while he was head of media giant Hollinger International. He served 37 months of a 42-month sentence, but has contended he was victimized by the American justice system, and that Canadian courts would never have convicted him. Asked if he now expects to retain his seat in the House of Lords, Black replied: ``Why not?'' adding there was no prohibition against those with convictions.

After Paxman pressed him about the convictions, Black responded: ``I am proud of having gone through the terribly difficult process of being falsely charged, falsely convicted and ultimately
almost completely vindicated without losing my mind, becoming irrational, ceasing to be a penitent and reasonable person and actually being able to endure a discussion like this without getting up and smashing your face in, which is what most people would do if they had been through what I have been.'' ``Well, you go ahead,'' Paxman said. ``No, I don't believe in violence,'' Black replied.

Black also appeared irritated when Paxman began quizzing Black about his wife, Barbara Amiel, whom Paxman described as ``extravagant.'' ``After seven years, my first morning back in Britain, am I to be subjected to this?'' replied Black, who said his wife is a ``magnificent'' woman who visited him in prison every single week.

Despite the prickly interview, Black is scheduled to appear on the BBC One comedy show ``Have I Got News for You'' on Friday.

Meanwhile, appearing Tuesday on Sky News's ``Boulton and Co.,'' Black was asked by interviewer Adam Boulton whether he ever intended to take his seat in the House of Lords.

``Presumably, but I haven't decided that,'' he responded.  When Boulton asked Black where he was going to live, saying he'd been ``kicked out of America,'' Black said: ``Stop being a jackass;
you're just being abrasive.''

Black said he is not a refugee and was not deported.

HIS BOARDS OF DIRECTORS APPROVED ALL OF HIS 'BONUSES'!!! So his Boards should be thrown in prison for approving his bonuses! I don't like his greed, but hey, the Boards signed off on the bonuses, then BLACK DID NOT BREAK THE LAW. HE DID NOT STEAL.

Americans love burning people at the stake, and they love public spectacle. They let a ton of real thieves off the hook (read: Wall Street), and picked on a small Canadian.

This British interviewer is a priggish, smug, and a fool.

    GO CONRAD!!

It is pretty obvious who the "Jackass is"!! Prior to his conviction in the US, Black would have been the first to promote the US legal system but when it somehow affects him, it fails miserably.
The US is the only country to stand up to him, I am afraid Canada will not, as proved by the fact he still has the Order of Canada (it certainly diminishes it's value) and likewise Britain too, who obviously should kick him out of the House of Lords. As the interviewer said, how can a convict be responsible for changing the laws of the land.
As far as a convict is concerned, if it quacks like a duck, it's a duck.

The U.S. judicial system has gone off the rails years ago, what with its political correctness and attempts at what it sees as "class justice." Conrad Black has created more than any of the BBC or Sky people can claim to have thought of. The fact he doesn't suffer fools gladly must have made him an enemy in the eyes of the mediocrities who say they represent the U.S. justice system, and the same goes for the mediocrities who are driving the former (long time ago) flagship of good journalism into mud, face first.
