PQ to create police watchdog
The Parti Quebecois says it will move forward with its plan to create an agency of civilians to investigate police incidents.
But, the idea is not without its critics.
Public security minister Stephane Bergeron says he'll create the government body. perhaps as early as this fall.
"We have to make sure that the public will gain confidence in the police forces," he says.
The new unit could look like Ontario's special investigative unit, with a mix of retire cops and lawyers.
But, several independent reports from the Ontario auditor and ombudsman have accused that unit of being toothless and biased.
The Liberal's Robert Poeti says the Ontario unit has problems, though he would not go into detail.
He says the Liberal proposal, to create a civilian body that observe police while they investigate other officers, is a better option.
"The proposal of the Liberal party, was a good way to prove to its citizens (that investigations are done correctly)," says Peoti.
