Manhattan goes dark as Sandy closes in on New York
Parts of New York City have gone eerily dark as Sandy closes in.
The power company Con Edison says it has begun the process of shutting off electrical service to a portion of Lower Manhattan, a move that will protect both company and customer equipment, and allow for quicker restoration after Hurricane Sandy passes.

Water from the storm was also seen on security camera rushing into a New York subway station.
