A 60-year-old woman is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle in Park Extension around 5:40 p.m.

Police confirm she is now under the care of surgeons who are trying to save her life.

She was crossing the road and the driver of the vehicle didn't see her.

"The driver was actually driving southbound on Birnham, trying to make a westbound turn on Ball [avenue]," said Constable Yannick Ouimet. That's when the piedestrian was struck by the vehicle.

Developing story...

It's dark now. Pedestrians look over your shoulder for turning cars. Drivers must slow down and make sure that no pedestrians are crossing the street. I am sure that this woman did not dart out into the traffic. Absolutely no excuse for this accident to have occured. Drivers need to slow down and respect the priority of pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections. I see this non respect for pedestrians everyday when I cross the intersection of Taschereau boulevard and St. Charles street (Charles Lemoyne Hospital) with the incredible 17 second traffic signal for pedestrians. What's that about!
