A 64-year-old man and his 9-year-old grandson die after falling through the ice while skating on a private lake in the Eastern Townships community of Ascot Corner.

The 9-year-old, identified as Nicolas Payeur, died overnight in hospital, while the grandfather, Gérard Payeur, died on the scene.

Police say they fell through thin ice at around 4:45 Friday afternoon.

Several family members, including the boy's grandmother, tried in vain to save the two. The grandmother suffered from hypothermia.

The total disregard for safety here is beyond comprehension.

This is something you do in mid January where the ice has had time to form, not mid November.

When I was a kid there was a poem about ice safety and I think it went like this

    1 inch NO WAY
    2 inches one may
    3 inches OK
    4 inches let's play
