City of Montreal tax hikes scaled back
Mayor Michael Applebaum tabled amendments Thursday to the proposed Montreal budget for 2013.
The Applebaum administration brought two amendments to the Montreal city council finance commission. The first, rolling back the 3.3 percent hike proposed by the former Tremblay adminisitration, to 2.2 percent, a move which Applebaum had long favored, and which would potentially cost the city some $32 million in lost revenue.
The second amendment would scale down the transit hikes announced in October, thanks to the city giving the STM an extra $5 million.
Some fares would still go up, but not by as much as previosuly announced.
A monthly pass, for instance, will cost an even $77, instead of $77.75.
