Couche-Tard on language black list

Posted By: Trudie Mason · 12/10/2012 9:45:00 AM

A big convenience store chain is in trouble with the language police.

La Presse reports that Couche-Tard was added to the OQLF black list a few days ago for not having renewed its francisation plan. Its last plan, containing objectives which were not achieved, expired more than a year ago.

The chain is one of the few big companies among the 31 entries on the black list, along with the La Senza lingerie chain and a Hilton Hotel downtown. All the rest are small businesses.

Firms on the black list cannot be awarded government contracts or get any government funding or help. Couche-Tard's addition to the list may complicate its business dealings, as the province's pension fund investor, the Caisse de Depot et Placement, is among its backers.

@Rudolph S That's funny. My Grandfather used to say "La Gestapo de la langue Francaise" When there was some stupid language issue came about.

This is rediculous.Couche Tard is one of many companies that is considered the darling of Quebec, and this is the way they are treated.

They probaly also need to add a descriptor since the name is not self explanatory. If Home Hardware must be Quinquillerie Home Hardware they should be forced toa add Dépaneur Couche-Tard to their signs to avoid confusing their bretehern who might think it has something to do with the civil service.

@Michael They've already changed the name from Mac's in other provinces to a French name in Quebec. What more do they want?? Remember people complaining about Metro grocery stores now having an accent over the e? Nothing better to do with their time I suppose but seek out problems and spread misery.

This is a prime example of why a lot of people are leaving Quebec.... I was born and raised francophone in Quebec and all this language police stuff has always made me sick.... Now I live in Florida where true freedom of speech still exists
    1. chuck posted on 12/11/2012 05:10 PM
@Richard Durivage more freedom in quebec will be a great idea...and one day it may happen.

One of the few Head Offices left in Quebec. Are they trying to drive them out!!!
In the La Presse article, the OQLF refuses to say what objectives they were not able to meet.
    1. chuck posted on 12/12/2012 06:22 AM
@Mark i suspect if couche-tard was still owned by a quebecker there would be no issues. with irving the owner its again another attempt to show "les maudits anglais" who is the boss. Really after 40 plus years of language language it is tiresome. The atmosphere of open hostility and hatred for anything english and dare i say foreign has changed quebec for the worse. I cannot imagine they can continue with the witch hunts an be a better people because of it. Anyone who has had to get out hopefully will remember the treatment received!

Sounds like black mail to me. All the companies mentioned have bigger fish to fry in the US. The government shouldn't worry about La Senza, because they are leaving the province in the next few months. All those people will be out of a job. This really makes a lot of sense, no jobs and everyone on welfare like sheep listening to the government and doing what they say!
    1. Kevin posted on 12/10/2012 02:39 PM
@Janet KUDOS to La Senza !!! I take my hat out to them for moving out of here. I would like to see what will happen to their mostly uni-lingual (french) speaking employees will do. All their Management is French - regardless if they are station in the West Island, and they (Managers) refuse to service you in English. It is alright though, things will fall into place now. Let them find jobs in their "french" abiding companies. Good luck. I am happy all the PQ constituents are reaping what they have sown. Sadly, we (the English) will continue to pay for their mistakes because they'll all end up on welfare and as M. Parizeau said all those years ago when he lost to the Liberals The "English money" and the "Ethics" will be paying for his lazy, lower class citizens to eat their poutines. Amen.

Highly successul Quebec based company. I guess they are too busy making foreign acquisitions and employing people here in Quebec to deal with government stupidities.

@Jansport You read my mind. I plan on only supporting retailers on that black list (as soon as I can find it...). We anglos can benefit from this list.

That's impossible - Marois says that there are no language police and we should all believe and trust her ! lol

If Couche tard is on the black ist, I think it's safe to say the rest of Quebec is doomed.
I cannot even begin to think of one thing wrong in couche tard to anger the Laughing Language Sheep. French.. yes, signs in french.. yes.. french outside signs.. YES. Bilingual Staff.. Yes..
Good for them though. I will be putting more dollars into their establishment for this.. Please make a copy of th offenders list according to the OLF.. It would narrow down my shopping stores a lot and help me choose where I put my hard earned dollars.

Why is this mad woman still at the helm and how much longer will anglophones and francophones "allow" her to tear apart a beauiful Province and Country? Just by looking into her eyes, you can see she is an insecure "mad maniac" who is so possessed by hatred, jealousy and spite towards anybody "non-francophone" that she will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. She and her flock are trying to "get back" at the anglophone community because of what went on in past descades. Pauline, we are not to blame for the fact that the (and I know you detest this "E" word) English population of QC were achieving university educations while the rest of you chose to stay home and raise your families...no disrespect to the church or anybody else intended. It was a personal choice for all involved! I chose to have children and remain at home, but this was my personal choice and I was fortunate enough to be able to do that. Some chose to go outside of the home to work out of necessity and I respect them for that. Why can't Pauline Marois show some respect?
Please, let's put an end to this vile treatment towards the anglophones and try to live in harmony before this PQ government pitts one community against the other and rips this province to pieces. I believe that without the PQ pointing fingers, blaming Ottawa for their woes and spewing such hatred, the people of Quebec would live and respect each other harmoniously. The time to act is now, not when it is too late.

@Ellen Dear Ellen, I understand your frustration, however there were enough shortsighted nationalist fanatics that put their X on the PQ ballot, (or rather not enough voters who found it necessary to vote against them ) Marois and her gang are now in a power euphorie and use their hate for everything anglais to come up with all kind of repressive laws . It will backfire, the Marois regime will go down in history as a small insignificant plip in the global picture of Quebec.. Unfortunately the Liberal Leaders in Quebec or the great Torrie Boopah in Ottawa have done preciously little to save la belle Province from the Maroisie, the next election will come and perhaps Je me souviens will also mean
      I REMEMBER

wow...talk about blackmail...if you don't abide by the rules of the language police you are restricted from any and all Quebec govt. tenders and getting any help from financial institutions, that they control.

    hypocrisy ..........at its finest...

this city and province is going down the tank so fast its ridiculous.

    No language,police??
Who the hell were those idiots who came to my place of work and told us to take down the motivational posters we had because they were English?
Just damn decoration, nothing to do with actual work...who were those idiots then?
Nothing better to do than to waste our, money on busting, all our chops and to take away our rights. I would like a full refund, please. Nazi scum
  16. lucinda posted on 12/10/2012 02:48 PM
I too, would like a copy of location where I can search those who are on this blacklist and help them to thrive because I would not give my business to anyone else from then on.
  17. Lewis posted on 12/10/2012 02:56 PM
Now I see and understand that its more important to have a Blacklist and fund this police. I mean, people dying, doctor's leaving, our education is zero. Makes ya wonder if all else fails get a job with the well funded OLF Oh wait...that won't work because they are English and can't speak enough French. Priorities....priorities....priorities... Marois almost bankrupted this province when she was Finance minister, now she will finish her job. Quebec won't have to separate. Canada will kick its bankrupt a$$ out.

I listen and read all cjad postings on and of the air and can not for the life of me figure out why can't you call a spade a spare. This so called government is nothing but a Franco- fascist neo-nazi government out to kill anything english. If it had anything to do with Jews and the Holocaust that happened 65 years ago, you'd be all up in arms. I see no difference on what's been going on here for the last 36 years.
    1. Linda B posted on 12/10/2012 11:59 PM
@Gary Szilagyi the thing they all forget...the language of money is ENGLISH!! So pleae separate Quebec....we are tired of your bs....I left that province years ago cause you want everything but have nothing. You leave Canada....no welfare...no assistance....no unemployment...no money...no currency...GO FOR IT!! Stop bsing us...just do it already! You will be scooped by the USA in no time cause you will never be able to afford your life style. STOP stressing people that pay taxes there to live there. GEEz ENOUGH ALREADY! Let the exodus begin!

I can't believe this is still going on in my beloved Montreal. I had a very successful advertising agency there for a couple of decades, and left because the prospect of living and raising three kids in such a contentious environment was not appealing.

This government doesn't have better things to do with our money than to attack businesses? We have roads and bridges to fix, amongst other things. STOP WASTING OUR TAX DOLLARS!!!

This company is making purchases all over the world, I'm sure if pushed enough they will move they're head office and CASH to another place and with the amount of CASH they have I'm pretty sure they will not be knocking at Pauline's door for charity. When they move and maybe close some stores all those nice young students who work there to help get through school will be the ones at Pauline's door for charity to help put them through school. So in reality this is the hand that feeds you and does not not this stupidity or your hand out.
