Hospital's Gangnam parody pulled

Posted By: Trudie Mason · 12/12/2012 10:09:00 AM

A Gangnam Style parody video by the medical imaging department at the Montreal General Hospital lasted just about a day online.  It was quickly yanked from the internet after hospital officials expressed their displeasure.

While the employees were off duty when they shot the quirky Gangnam dancing scenes, they did use hospital settings without permission.

The hospital says it did not order the video withdrawn, that the creators decided on their own accord to remove it.

The shoot was conceived as a morale booster in conjunction with the department's Christmas party.

it was such a great video. I thought it was funny, people were just having a good time, no harm was done or intended. hospital are usually are depressing places, it was a good way to disconnect from all problems and drama. Moreover the video was done on their own time after work hours. People are working crazy shifts(doubles, triples) to provide services to the public so doing a funny video to change the atmosphere was nothing wrong with it. I think public need to calm down. There are bigger problems in our society; people dying, kids missing, corruption, buildings falling apart, injustice. People should be worrying about bigger problems then about protecting their image or property on publicity. Video like that don't last long. Another drama will come up and everyone will forget about it. So why making such a hassle?

Thanks for crushing everybody's Holiday spirits. The Grinch still exists.

The people involved in this video did nothing wrong but try to bring a smile to everyone's faces. I only wish every department had workers that shows this much teamwork and comradery.

Everything was done on their own time and after hours. No patients were in any way affected or disturbed as that floor is for Medical Imaging and was closed during the time it was used.

It was the first time all the different sites (MGH/RVH/MNH/Lachine) were united together for a Christmas Party. This video was created to introduce the MGH team to everybody.

Coming down on the workers like this and making them remove the video is very disheartening and goes to show how much management cares about morale in the workplace.

It's time the truth comes out as we've only been hearing the story from hospital officials. The video should be re-released and the public can form their own opinion.

I've been working as a clerk at the MGH for 20+ years. I couldn't say it any better or clearer than Patrucia and Scott did. I second that. This issue is about image, not cost. There was no cost to the public. And whomever cites this video as an example of wasted public funds is blatantly ignorant. You need to turn your lenses toward upper management and the government for that.

I understand that it is prohibited to film of take pictures on the MGH site without permission but there was nothing negatively expressed or implied about the hospital.

I loved the video and was so impressed by the teamwork and comradery expressed by the medical Imaging staff. Something sorely missing in most of the departments I've worked for. Good on you!

Kudos also to the producers of this video for their leadership and motivational skills. Great job guys!

Thank you medical imaging staff for lifting my Holiday spirits and making me believe that it is possible to have a positive group dynamic in the public health care.

They were trying to bring FUN to the department, AFTER HOURS, after a long day's work. Was that so wrong? Putting it online simply to show to fellow coworkers, friends and family that these are the people that they spend a lot of time with. And lets not forget,' it was for a Christmas party. To show everyone, what they do in an entertaining way. Too much emphasis is put on the negative aspects of the video, just because of the location. How about we focus on the positive, and how it brought the department together and how it it brings the entire health system together. Their coworkers on the floors, clinics and other department were just as entertained. With all the bad press going on the MUHC, Should this not be the least of their worries?

These hard working professionals were having healthy fun in their off duty time.
Party poopers those at Communicatiions MUHC.
Why did they not publicize previous CEO (Porter) shenanigans?

Funny how so many people were involved in making this video, yet not one has been approached to tell their side of the story.

It all boils down to Administators and their overinflated egos.

What everyone seems to be forgetting is that this is a HOSPITAL. Yes, they were off hours, and yes, having a little fun is a great thing, however are still procedures to follow and it is no ordinary office bulding. Sensitive materials and information are everywhere, patients files, test results, patients themselves... If they wanted to shoot a video and put it on the internet there are proper channels to go through, and it's not a problem. Don't disregard the rules everyone knows about then be surprised when the employer isn't happy about them. yes, I work there too.

@Meg What you do not realize is that this video was not made covertly. It wasn't done in secret. They didn't hide in the shadows to film this. It took a period of almost 3 months to do. It's not like they held a party while the parents were away. This was a project for a Christmas party. Measures were taken to not show any patient data, files, test results or even the patients themselves. That's why it was done after hours.

You labelling a hospital as 'no ordinary office building' just proves to me you probably hide in an office somewhere away from patients never really knowing what takes place in the hospital environment.

Hey wait a minute, like it or not YouTube is the 21st century's entertainment, advertising, information media. If this Gangnam Style parody had gone viral, the MUHC could use the proceeds for the Foundation. Why do todays employers crush the spirits of good hardworking employees. Focus on the positive. Use these talented young artists, director, film makers and be proud to have them on your team.

If the administration of a major urban hospital has nothing more pressing to concern itself with than some employees being happy after work and sharing it with the world, then I guess the hospital has all the funding it needs, wait times are next to nil, and every one of their patients are getting the best possible care.

I didn't get a chance to see the video, but from everything I've read about it, there was nothing that might tarnish the hospital's image; its removal has.

The administration has an opportunity here to show themselves to be regular folks with sense of humour, and ask the video's creators to put it back up.

@Al Al about your last paragraph it would be nice if they would come to realize that they did a mistake by ordering to take it off Youtube but they don't feel that way. They are even making this story bigger than it is now they prevented to play Gangnam Style during a different party, in a different Hospital so I herd, they are afraid of getting a video on Youtube even during a party I don't know what up with that??? they are so up tight with this story that you can't have fun in a Christmas party because of that story unbelievable a big story all for nothing that's all I have to say.
