Sun Youth handing out Christmas baskets
It's an annual holiday tradition at Sun Youth.
Their annual Christmas basket giveaway got underway today.
Between now and Christmas Eve, 18,000 Montrealers who've registered with the organization will be eligible to receive Christmas hampers which include food and toys.
On the first day, the likes of NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and PQ minister Jean-François Lisée were on hand to assist Sun Youth volunteers and employees in handing out the baskets.
Sid Stevens with Sun Youth says Montrealers came through with flying colors this season.
"There's been an explosion of generosity in the last ten days that made us realize the number one goal, and that is to take care of the needs of 8,000 youngsters, and 18,000 people," Stevens says.
He adds, though, that Sun Youth is still counting on Montrealers to help fill the needs of the city's most vulnerable during the winter months, where he says the needs are often greater than they are during the holiday season.
