Gas prices take a massive jump

Posted By: Richard Deschamps · 1/4/2013 2:12:00 PM

It's one of the bigger one-day jumps for gas prices we've seen in a while.

Some stations are reporting the price of a litre of regular is up to 138.4 cents a litre, up from 123.4.

A 15-cent jump.

Some stations have raised their prices in the Montreal area, though some haven't.

So that means, the time to fill up would be right now, because by morning, the price hike should be in effect everywhere.

I wish that I had remembered to check the CJAD website last Friday afternoon. I could have used an extra half tank of gas at the lower price. Now I just have to hope that gas prices decrease somewhat before my tank reaches empty.

That being said, CJAD's recent reporting of gas price hikes has been problematic. In the 12-day period from December 24th to January 4th, there were four reports that the price of gas was about to jump to over 135 cents per litre but only the last one actually happened on the West Island. In the first three instances, the price stayed the same or decreased by a cent.

So, what happened? Were West Island gas station operators feeling the Christmas spirit and deciding to not raise prices when the rest of Montreal did? Or were some of the increases in gas prices that CJAD reported the result of false information that was perhaps provided by pranksters? Whatever the cause, I now find myself somewhat less trusting of CJAD's reporting of gas price hikes.
