Ice storm anniversary

15 years ago on January 5th,  the famous ice storm began in Quebec.

Freezing rain caused so much damage that more than one million homes were without power, some for more than a month.     The Island of Montreal and the Monteregie were particularly affected. More than a thousand Hydro Quebec towers were  damaged. The Canadian military was even called in for relief operations.

Since then, Hydro has created a new grid, Hertel-Des Cantons line, to prevent a similar disaster from happening again.

The write-up in this piece - in particular, the reference to the army and the Ice Storm, reminded me of my involvement with the armed forces during the 'Storm.'

After spending a few miserable days at home, my wife and I decided to spend our time elsewhere. We checked out a few places....There was no way we were going to 'live' at the Pierrefonds Arena which housed about a hundred or so people.... I recall seeing people living in very cramped and depressing quarters....Staying in the car was more suitable.

Meanwhile right across the street was a large complex where I worked as a teacher for about 30 years - Pierrefonds Comprehensive High School. After some negotiating with my superiors, we were allowed to stay there....

Imagine : the building has emergency electric generators and , therefore, heat and light, and warm water, which was much appreciated for showers....Of course, the school cafeteria kitchen had stoves and fridges that worked... The nurse's office had cots...It was quite comfortable , considering what was on the outside.

After the third day, I was informed that the army was coming in, to check out the practicality of the place, if the ' Ice Storm'' continued...

I showed them around and I was pleased to report that the Canadian Armed forces, in January 1998, deemed PCHS to be most decent to house 3000 people..... The word was out that in the event the Ice Storm continued , people would be shuttled in... Classroms would be used for large families, and we even decided where kindergarten kids would play....Don't forget, the school has the largest sports complex in the West Island....

Anyway, all plans were put aside because the next day the power was restored.....It's good to know that somewhere in the offices of the Canadian Armed Forces there are plans to house many people, in the West Island, in the event some catastrophe occurs.
