Segregated swimming prompts complaint

A woman is complaining about the gender-specific swimming sessions offered for years at the city pool in the borough of Cote des Neiges - NDG.

The borough began offering the sessions because of requests from some Muslim and Jewish residents.  Two hours a week are set aside for men only, and two for women only, with people of all beliefs able to take part.

The woman is complaining about discrimination because she was turned away when she arrived with her two young children during the men only period last Sunday.  And she is getting a sympathetic response from the Council on the Status of Women and Quebec's secular movement, both of which have concerns about the segregated swimming sessions.

The lady who complained is being a baby, that's all. I think this is an excellent idea. Many of my friends prefer swimming in the comfort of being with their own gender, and that has nothing to do with religious beliefs, just personal preferences.

@Stef Have you not noticed that men that attend pool time are not there for female watching. Only to get their exercise. They are not looking at the females... And yes, it is not a religious issue, it is a cultural issue. And in Canada, the culture dictates that genders mix. You must get your kids used to gender mixing.

This is an issue of suppressing the majority's rights in order to please the minorities shortcomings.

I applaud this woman for sticking up for her rights and I hope Julie Miville Dechenes corrects the problem.

This is laughable. The headline should be changed to "Ignoramus has nothing better to do but cause commotion over nothing."

And why is there no such thing as Council on the Status of Men?
Oh right, when men do it it's sexist, no double standard here.

The woman has a point. As a taxpayer, thus contributing financially to the upkeep of the pool, she has a right to access the public pool during operating hours.

There are people wishing to use the pool during those hours whose schedule is not compatible with other time slots. Should these people be deprived of their right because a few individuals are uncomfortable with the opposite gender?

According to my pool experience, men in the public inside pools are there for the exercise and not female watching. The earlier in life boys and girls get used to mixing with one another, and yes, even in swimsuits, the less they will be affected by uncovered skin.

Women in islamic countries are covered up and segregated and still, there are rape epidemics and constant sexual harassment when the men see a bit of exposed arm. More and more male immigrants to the West from islamic countries have difficulty containing their sexual pulsions when faced with an uncovered leg...

Finally, it's not the only pool in Montreal to restrict citizens' rights re accessing a public service they pay for. More and more of these public pools cave in to the demands of installing special blinds (thousands of dollars) to accomodate a secluded minority. In Ontario, they even train and pay for muslim-only lifeguards that work only for their muslim clientele...

We live in a secular society. The rights of the minority should never infringe on the rights of the majority.

Interesting that Jews and Muslims would swim together, if they were the same sex!
I guess that there is some hope for peace in the Middle East! :o)

@mike What a stupid comment!!! here in montreal we are proud that we respect every single citizen, and we satisfy every citizen!!! No big deal to give 2 hours a week for men only and 2 hours a week for women only. this lady that has a problem with this should find a different city to live in.

@mike Funny how you conveniently skipped the "JEWS and MUSLIMS" part and just made this story about Muslims only. Guess you're somewhat uncomfortable telling Jews "to go away", while you have no problem telling the same to Muslims. As for this "woman": typical feminist nutcase. People who don't want to swim with the opposite gender should be free to do so. But feminist are after a gender-totalitarian society in which you should be forced to live according to their silly ideological nonsense.

I suggest that we turn this whole adventure over to the OLF. With their budget increases and the ability only to pursue imbecile trivial matters as the majority of the province adheres to the law . They should create a new department called Swimming Police. They are experts in handling matters of absurdity and should have no trouble handling such pressing matters. Unfortunately, they may have to reallocate staff that are currently verifying that Walmart's soap dispensers in their bathrooms which come from the U.S and have the imprinted word soap are stickered with the word savon to comply with bill 101 so that Quebec's culture is protected.
