University students ready for summit

The federation representing a majority of university students in Quebec says it's time to get the politics out of university funding and just look at the numbers. The Federation of Quebec University Students -- the FEUQ -- has unveiled the brief it plans to present at the upcoming summit on superior education.

Martine Desjardins, president of the FEUQ, says that saying universities are underfunded doesn't make it so. University underfunding, she says, is not a religion.

Desjardins will tell the summit on superior education that there must be a commission set up to look at the cold hard numbers, and that if there is indeed underfunding, to offer the proof and not simply take the word of university rectors and principles, represented by the CREPUQ.

Ultimately, says Desjardins, all those interested in the question of university funding must agree to take the politics out of the issue and focus on simple economics.

There will be another pre-summit meeting Thursday and Friday, with the actual summit to get underway in mid-February.
