Call for more seniors' homes inspections

A Quebec group representing retired public sector workers is calling for more inspections and surprise visits of long term care homes.

The Association québécoise des retraité(e)s des secteurs public et parapublic (AQRP) says there've been 20 deaths under questionable circumstances in seniors' homes since January 2011.

The group says particular attention should be paid to the Maison Herron in Dorval, the Résidence Les Floralies Lachine and the Centre d'hébergement de St. Eustache. These establishments were targetted at least twice in coroners' reports over the past two years for mysterious or violent deaths. The association says the causes were usually bad quality of care, inadequate surveillance measures and negligence.

The group says the current number of inspections is insufficient. It's also calling on Quebec's health minister to ensure that any establishment that were not inspected last year, definitely be seen this year.
