EXCLUSIVE: Tax evasion-fighting system expands
Revenue Quebec plans to embed its electronic tax-evasion-fighting system into new industries.
Last year, all restaurants had to start using a system that reports all their tax revenues to the government.
"Now we have to obligations to see how we can do the same thing in other industries," says Stéphane Dion, the Revenue Quebec spokesperson.
Before the system took root in the restaurant industry, some owners would charge QST to their clients, and then pocket the money for themselves. Quebec is now raking in $300 million more a year.
Dion would not say what other industries might be next. "Maybe in the next months we'll have something to announce about that," he says. However, CJAD has heard that hair salons and taxi cabs could be among the possibilities.
