Neighbors, friends react to Dorval tragedy

We're beginning to learn more about the young brothers involved in that horrible tragedy in Dorval Monday afternoon.

The 16-year-old who was shot to death, attended Lakeside Academy in Lachine, while his 12-year-old brother goes to St-Thomas in Pointe-Claire.

The 12-year-old was charged with manslaughter and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Classmates of the teen at Lakeside tell CJAD news he was in Grade 11 and was a special needs student.

"He was a really good friend to a lot of people at this school," says one student.

"It's just sad," says another. "He was a nice guy."

While the schools declined to comment on the situation, the Lester B. Pearson School Board says it has sent grief counsellors and psychologists to both schools.

Meanwhile, neighbors near the Dorval home on Hamilton Place at Thorncrest, are shocked and saddened by the news.

Neighbor Brendan Finnerty is trying to understand how something like this can happen.

"It's a tragedy, but why? That gun should have been locked up properly,' he says.

Police say charges could be brought against the 12-year-old, including involuntary manslaughter.

The gun was owned by the family. The boys lived with their mother who was not home at the time of the tragic accident.

Such a sad story out of Dorval. The thought that this boy, if his actions are proven to be intentional, should not be punished is so off base. I, for one, am so tired of the kid-glove approach to these situations. The Young Offenders act needs a serious overhaul, if not to be repealed all together. Hanging our hats on the fact that people this young can't reason their actions is just not so anymore. Also saying that the mother has already lost one son, and shouldn't lose another to the justice system... Perhaps, but do we think she will ever be able to look at her 12 year old the same again? Tragic. I didn't intend to jump on any bandwagon... far too early for that.

@Jill He's a child. The mother is the adult.
Why was the gun available to a child?
Does a 12 years old really realize, understand the pain, the consequences?
That age how much knowledge, experiences, understanding a child has?
I thought the adult was responsible for whatever happens to a child.
She lost 2 sons, very sad. Sad that she is not held responsible as a mother, as an adult to protect her children.
Loaded gun? In a house? Available to children? under 18?
The whole this is so sad. A ruined family. The poor 12 years old who has to grow up with his action.

what does prohibit weapon mean? just means to lock it? Criminal code says 5 years in jail.
Using gun to protect family? bad! the robber is faster than her because her weapon is locked; if not locked, other day kids can get it! In USA, NRA invented a way to increase their sales: "send armed men to every school"; if it is true, now they should say to "send armed man to every family". But I don't think any mother accept an unknown man stay in her home. We should not follow USA where their ancestors left the gun problem to which their kids have to suffer. Canadian had better gun control before Harper (who will not be long). If we really need examples, there are also Australia, Singapore, Japan, ... Kids are innocent, the problem comes from the parent!
