Fatal fire in St. Michel

Montreal police arson investigators are dealing with a fatal fire in St. Michel.

Firefighters got the call just after 11 this morning, for a fire at 7726 15th avenue, just south of Cremazie. It broke out on the ground floor of the duplex, and quickly came to engulf it.

It took about 50 firefighters to put the blaze out, and once they did, they found the body of a woman on the ground floor.

A 19-year-old woman living on the ground floor had gone missing as the building's residents were being evacuated.

For the moment, fire officials are saying they have no reason to believe the fire was deliberately set, though the police arson squad is investigating, as they always do in cases where there's a death or serious injury in a fire.
