More power records could be set

Hydro-Quebec says it reached its all-time power consumption peak Wednesday morning at around 7 o'clock -- 38,910 megawatts -- that's more than 1000 megawatts better than the all time record set on Jan. 24 2011.

And that, too, was set in the middle of a bad cold snap.

And the utility is expecting to top that record again on Thursday morning, expecting a peak consumption of 39,500 megawatts.

Hydro is asking people to power down their thermostats, dishwashers and other things between 4 and 8 o'clock in the evening, and between 6 and 9 o'clock in the morning, to reduce the burden on the system, and to keep the utility from having to purchase electricity from elsewhere.

CAA Quebec busy

Meanwhile, over at CAA Quebec, they're heading toward a record of their own, the one-day recod of calls they get from stranded or stalled motorists in one day.

As of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, they had received 9,300 calls province-wide.

The all-time record is at 12,578, a record that was also set on Jan. 24, 2011.
