Drivers still texting, cellphone yakking
A survey of Quebec drivers shows a PR campaign about the dangers of texting and using handheld cellphones behind the wheel had only limited success.
The poll was conducted for the Quebec Auto Insurance Board. La Presse says it shows 18-percent of drivers text in traffic, down just one point since that big PR campaign against the practice last year.
The number of texters is even higher among young drivers. More than a third of those aged 16 to 34 are still texting.
However, the indicators are that drivers are aware of the dangers and are trying to cut back on the habit. The number reporting now that they text "often" or "very often" is down by nearly half compared with survey results before the PR push.
